A legendary management consultant and writer, Peter Drucker, has rightly quoted- “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Léa Baltzinger embodies this belief and translates this philosophy into action.

In our quest to find Most Influential HR Leaders in 2024, we crossed paths with Lea, who is currently serving as Chief People Officer at Arbonne. She is known for cultivating a thriving company culture that empowers employees and fuels business success.

Lea holds over two decades of experience transforming HR across diverse industries like entertainment, retail, and healthcare. Her philosophy is deceptively simple: strong companies are built on strong cultures. And her approach extends far beyond a mere platitude. At Arbonne, she has spearheaded initiatives that prioritize cultural fit during recruitment, foster effective onboarding experiences, and seamlessly integrate company values into performance management. These seemingly small steps have a profound impact. By ensuring employees feel valued, motivated, and aligned with the company’s core principles, Lea lays the foundation for a thriving organization.

The Strategic Power of HR

Lea’s influence, however, transcends the creation of a happy workforce. She possesses a deep understanding of the intricate connection between HR and overall business success. A prime example lies in her experience at her first company. Here, she wasn’t confined to the traditional HR silo. Instead, Lea was included in major strategy meetings, gaining a crucial grasp on the financial side of the business. This financial fluency empowered her to tailor HR programs that directly impacted the bottom line. Think leadership development programs that fueled innovation, or re-skilling initiatives that ensured employees possessed the skillsets needed to achieve new strategic goals. In Lea’s world, HR isn’t simply about managing people; it’s about managing human capital, a vital driver of any company’s success.

Lea’s expertise extends beyond organic growth to the complex world of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). She recognizes that the success of an M&A hinges as much on integrating people as on merging finances. Her focus on human capital integration ensures that the merging companies’ cultures and goals become one cohesive unit, akin to different sports teams learning to play together and win as one.

Championing Diversity and Inclusion

In today’s dynamic landscape, Diversity and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives are a subject of intense discussion. Lea, however, doesn’t view them as a passing trend, but as a strategic necessity. This isn’t just about championing ethical practices, it’s about smart business strategy.

Diverse teams bring a wider range of perspectives to the table, leading to more effective problem-solving and groundbreaking innovation. “I have always taken a transformational approach, going beyond surface-level representation to cultivate an environment of true belonging where all voices are empowered to contribute their unique perspectives,” she expresses.

Through inclusive meetings, creative brainstorming techniques, and cross-functional initiatives, Lea empowers her teams to respectfully challenge assumptions and explore ideas from diverse angles. In an era of constant disruption, sustainable innovation isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for survival. Lea’s approach transforms DE&I from a compliance box to a competitive asset, recognizing the strategic value it brings to the organization. It’s not just good ethics, it’s good business strategy.

A Commitment to Continuous Learning

Lea embodies the spirit of a lifelong learner, constantly seeking ways to stay ahead of the ever-evolving HR landscape. She readily embraces technology and data analytics, recognizing them as powerful tools to streamline processes and elevate the employee experience. Take, for instance, her focus on talent acquisition. Lea understands that the traditional approach of simply posting job descriptions and sifting through resumes is no longer sufficient. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, she can connect with a wider pool of qualified candidates, ensuring a more diverse and qualified talent pool. Additionally, data analytics empowers Lea to measure the effectiveness of HR programs and make data-driven decisions that truly benefit the organization.

Furthermore, Lea fosters a culture of innovation within her teams. She encourages them to experiment with new ideas and embrace continuous learning. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the HR department at Arbonne remains at the forefront of the industry, prepared to tackle the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

Embracing Change and Building Bridges

The future of work is undergoing a seismic shift, and Lea is ready to navigate these changes. She recognizes the growing popularity of remote work and predicts a hybrid model that merges the best aspects of both in-office and remote work environments. Technology will play a pivotal role in this model, facilitating seamless communication and collaboration. However, Lea emphasizes the continued importance of the physical workplace. She envisions it evolving into a space that fosters a sense of community and culture, a place where employees connect, collaborate, and build relationships.
