Nairobi, Kenya, a bustling city where urban life meets the sprawling landscapes of neighborhoods, offered the backdrop to Nzambi Matee’s remarkable journey—a journey from engineer to environmental heroine. Her life story embodies the power of innovation, determination, and unwavering commitment to addressing one of the world’s most pressing issues: plastic pollution. In a world where single-use plastics have inundated our lives, choking the environment, Nzambi’s story is a glimmer of hope.

The Early Days

Nzambi Matee, a young Kenyan engineer, grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, where the streets were lined with plastic waste. Kenya, like many places worldwide, faced a severe plastic problem. Statistics showed that Nairobi produces approximately 2,400 tons of solid waste every day, with 20% of it being composed of plastic materials and only a small portion of which was being recycled. The rest cluttered the environment, causing harm to nature and the landscape.

For Nzambi, the plastic pollution issue was more than just a problem; it was a call to action.

The Genesis of Gjenge Makers

Years passed, and Nzambi’s curiosity evolved into determination. In 2017, she decided to do more than simply lament the state of her surroundings. With a clear vision, she founded Gjenge Makers, a company whose mission was as clear as day: to transform plastic waste into sustainable construction materials. The name “Gjenge,” which translates to “block” in Swahili, was a fitting choice for a company that created building blocks and paving stones from recycled plastic. Nzambi embarked on a journey that would leave an indelible mark on the environment and the construction industry.

The Innovation That Changed the Game

“What if we could turn this plastic waste into something useful?” Nzambi pondered as she looked at the growing pile of plastic bags in her backyard. It was this question that led her to experiment with various methods and materials.

In her quest for a solution, Nzambi and her team focused on collecting discarded plastics, particularly low-density polyethylene and high-density polyethylene—the same materials that comprised the problematic plastic bags and bottles littering the streets. Through a carefully crafted process, they converted this plastic waste into bricks, creating a product that was eco-friendly and surpassed traditional construction materials in several ways. These bricks were not only durable and lightweight but also acted as a remedy for the country’s plastic pollution crisis.

The Environmental and Economic Impact

Gjenge Makers’ products brought about a dual impact. On one hand, they were contributing to the solution to plastic pollution, mitigating the ecological damage caused by plastics overflowing landfills, contaminating rivers, and endangering marine life. On the other hand, these innovative bricks provided an affordable and sustainable solution to the pressing problem of building materials in Kenya and beyond.

In Kenya, the annual plastic waste generation exceeded 966,000 tons, and less than 10% of it was recycled, contributing to a growing environmental problem. These bricks not only offered an eco-conscious solution but also addressed the scarcity and cost issues of traditional building materials. They presented a new option for construction, especially in low-income communities where affordable and sustainable construction materials were urgently needed.

Accolades and Recognition

Nzambi Matee’s dedication and Gjenge Makers’ pioneering efforts did not go unnoticed. They received numerous awards and accolades, shining a spotlight on their contributions to the environment. One of the most prestigious honors came from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), naming Nzambi a Young Champion of the Earth. These awards not only celebrated Nzambi’s commitment but also emphasized the significant role that sustainable entrepreneurship can play in addressing plastic pollution and environmental degradation.

The Ongoing Journey

Nzambi Matee’s journey is far from over. In a world facing an increasingly critical environmental crisis, her story is a ray of hope, showing how passion, ingenuity, and entrepreneurship can unite to foster real change. Her life and work offer more than a glimmer of hope; they provide a roadmap to a more sustainable future. As we write this ode to her incredible journey, Nzambi continues to inspire us all to be part of the solution to one of the most pressing issues of our time.

In a world inundated with environmental concerns and the consequences of plastic pollution, Nzambi Matee’s journey is a testament to the impact that one individual can make. Her life story is a call to action, urging us all to play a part in addressing our planet’s pressing challenges. As we celebrate her ongoing journey and contributions, we look to Nzambi as a source of inspiration and a reminder that, indeed, we can all make a difference.
