Observed on 12th August every year, International Youth Day is an awareness day dedicated to celebrating the power, responsibilities, and contributions of young people to make this world a better place for all. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development” emphasizes the vital role of young people in harnessing technology to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With digital transformation acting as a catalyst for progress across the SDGs, the focus is on how youth, often seen as “digital natives,” are driving innovative solutions to global challenges.
Young people, the largest demographic shaping digital trends, are at the forefront of adopting and innovating with new technologies. As the 2030 deadline for the SDGs looms, youth remain central to leveraging digital tools to address pressing issues like climate change, inequality, and mental health. Despite challenges such as the digital divide, youth continue to push boundaries, proving essential in the global effort to meet SDG targets.
António Guterres, UN Secretary-General stated, “International Youth Day celebrates the immense power and potential of young people. This year, we focus on their pivotal role in harnessing technology to advance sustainable development. From combating climate change to addressing inequalities and the mental health crisis, youth are turning clicks into progress. However, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals demands a seismic shift, one that requires empowering young people and collaborating with them as equals. As we navigate the future, young voices must be central in shaping digital policies and institutions. The UN remains committed to standing with and for youth, drawing on their energy and ideas to create a more sustainable future for all.”
To commemorate this day, UN DESA, in collaboration with ITU, UN-Habitat, and IGF, will release a series of digital products. These include case study infographics, interactive quizzes, and a social media toolkit to enhance understanding of youth-driven digital solutions.
