OpenAI’s Bold Move into AI Hardware

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is preparing to launch its first artificial intelligence (AI) chip in 2026 in partnership with U.S. semiconductor leader Broadcom, according to a report from the Financial Times. The move signals a strategic step to reduce its reliance on Nvidia, whose GPUs currently dominate AI training and deployment.

The AI chip, designed specifically to power OpenAI’s internal systems, will not be made available to external customers at launch. Instead, it will be used to enhance the company’s infrastructure and optimize performance for its large language models and AI products.

Why OpenAI is Building Its Own AI Chip

Generative AI technologies like ChatGPT require vast computing power, and the cost of relying heavily on third-party hardware suppliers like Nvidia is substantial. By creating custom silicon, OpenAI aims to:

Tan hinted earlier this year that Broadcom was working with multiple new partners on custom silicon, in addition to its existing large-scale clients. This aligns with OpenAI’s ambition to join tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Meta, which have already built proprietary chips for AI workloads.
