DeepScribe, a prominent enterprise-grade AI medical scribe, has unveiled significant enhancements to its integration with Epic Systems’ electronic health record (EHR). The recently introduced Customization Studio by DeepScribe, enabling users to construct custom models catering to unique specialty and organizational requirements, is now seamlessly integrated with Epic’s SmartData elements. This groundbreaking integration positions DeepScribe as the inaugural solution to synchronize a comprehensive suite of customization options with Epic’s interface, setting a new standard for ambient solutions on the platform.
Developed in collaboration with Epic and DeepScribe client Covenant HealthCare, the improvements to DeepScribe’s integration were influenced by feedback from clinicians, technical experts, and organizational stakeholders. This user-centric approach allows DeepScribe to deliver highly personalized documentation directly into specific fields of a patient’s chart. Already in action, this integration has enabled clinicians at Covenant to reduce after-hours documentation by up to 75 percent.
Frank Fear, CIO of Covenant HealthCare, commented on the collaboration, stating, “We collaborated extensively with DeepScribe developers to enhance the integration in a manner that comprehensively addresses clinical needs. Our primary goal was to ensure compatibility with Epic’s SmartData elements. With this functionality now in place, we can fully leverage all of DeepScribe’s unique features in a cohesive manner, empowering us to streamline workflows and enhance the clinician-patient experience.”
This close collaboration has established the foundational infrastructure for SmartData compatibility on the Epic platform, improving back-end communication and becoming the preferred integration method for all ambient solutions. This enhancement unlocks the full capabilities of DeepScribe’s Customization Studio across various Epic instances, including Hyperdrive™, Hyperspace®, and Haiku®. By introducing SmartData compatibility, DeepScribe not only enhances its user-friendly interface but also paves the way for other ambient solutions to follow suit.
Matthew Ko, DeepScribe President & COO, emphasized, “Supporting clinicians through the power of ambient AI goes beyond note-taking. Success lies in full EHR compatibility, accommodating clinician preferences, and developing technology that alleviates the documentation burden. Since our collaboration with Epic began in 2022, we continue to deliver innovations aligned with that mission.”
Key features of the integration include the Customization Studio, providing users with tools to customize notes, SmartData Compatibility for seamless information transfer into Epic, HEAL LLM (Large Language Model) for enhanced accuracy, Visit Type Templating to configure clinical notes based on visit types, and continuous training for ongoing model refinement.
DeepScribe’s ambient solution, accessible through the Epic Connection Hub, functions seamlessly across various platforms, including workstations, browsers, and mobile devices. Those interested can request a demo at deepscribe.ai/contact.
