Running a business has never been short of distractions. Sales, marketing, hiring, finance, technology, and constant market shifts compete for attention every single day. Amid all that noise, many businesses mistake activity for progress, when what they really need is clarity.
Chris Pennisi has built his work around helping businesses find exactly that. As the Founder of Boss Connect, he believes strategy is not about having the loudest voice or the biggest budget. It is about connecting the right people, identifying the right opportunities, and creating systems that support sustainable growth.
Backed by more than two decades of commercial leadership, Chris has earned a reputation for helping businesses move beyond short-term fixes and build stronger, smarter foundations for the future.
His perspective challenges many of the assumptions businesses make about growth. Interested in learning more about the ideas shaping his journey, we had the opportunity to speak with Chris Pennisi about leadership, strategy, and the power of meaningful connection.
Following are the excerpts from the interview:
Chris, every strategist develops their philosophy through experience. Looking back over your career in sales, marketing, and business development, what were the defining moments that shaped how you think about business strategy today?
When I was young, I was told I could talk underwater. I’ve always been one to talk, engage, and connect, and over time, during school, college, and early employment, I found that I could engage and build strong relationships. So, naturally, sales and marketing were the natural career path to harness that.
Whether it was running a youth group, leading school groups, or delivering business projects, I tried to learn as much as I could in every situation so that I could better myself and deliver more for those around me. I had incredible mentors along the way who provided a new piece of the puzzle at every turn, and every experience brought new and exciting challenges that I had to overcome.
Having managed sales teams and worked for others for 20 years, I finally felt confident enough to venture out on my own so that I could spend more time with my young family. With two kids under six and school starting, I wanted to put family and flexibility as my focus.
You founded Boss Connect to help businesses grow with stronger commercial foundations rather than quick fixes. What gap in the market were you trying to solve?
Everyone claims to be an expert in sales or marketing, or both, but I found that a lot of my close clients were being led astray, costing them extraordinary amounts for little return. I wanted to ensure that what I delivered actually lived up to the investment made by the business. Also, my philosophy has always been to focus on value-add.
Boss Connect came about by utilising all manner of connections for businesses. Whether it’s connecting people through media, publications, events, expos, consulting, or more, connection is and will always be at the heart of Boss Connect, bringing incredible people together through many different opportunities.
The word “strategy” is used constantly in business, yet many organizations still struggle to execute effectively. In your view, what separates a genuine strategy from simply having ambitious goals?
Businesses have had to deal with all things internet-related, social media, SEO, and, on top of that, COVID, a financial crisis, increasing interest rates, and more. The problem so many business leaders face is that they are great at one particular thing and build a business around that, but they let so many other important and competing needs fall behind.
Sales, marketing, finances, employing people, and so much more cause so much noise for any business leader that most just feel like they are firefighters, putting out the worst fire at any given time.
A genuine strategy encompasses all aspects of a business, and a focused business leader knows which aspects they need help with and goes out and gets support to strengthen those areas.

When you begin working with a business, what are the first signs that tell you growth is being held back by strategy rather than execution?
The great thing about Boss Connect and providing a range of services through connection is that I can quickly and effectively engage with a client to identify the gaps in their strategy and support them in rectifying them—not only through my own knowledge but also through a dedicated team of partners covering a number of industries in which I don’t have qualified expertise.
By being able to guide clients and introduce preferred partners, I can easily cater to a variety of budgets, needs, and deliverables to ensure the best outcome for each client. Why sell a client a social media strategy when they are already doing it really well? Being able to mix and match allows clients to get what works best for them.
Part of what I do by bringing people together through incredible events also allows clients and partners to come together to meet and engage in person.
You’ve helped organizations secure government grants, win private tenders, and enter enterprise markets. What do successful businesses understand about positioning themselves that others often overlook?
As we continue with the theme of business, consulting, and connection, we start to see that there are so many competing needs within a business that it often becomes overwhelming, even for great business leaders. Not knowing where to start, what to do next, or what to prioritise is difficult.
Grants and tenders are great opportunities for additional financial wins and support, but they are only a small component of the many opportunities that exist for businesses. Successful businesses excel in knowing everything that is available to support them, even if it’s not something they can do themselves.
Knowing there is a grant you want to apply for makes it easier to then find a grant writer who can support you with the application. It’s not just about putting a social media post on a Facebook page once a month and hoping the 300 followers you have will support your business. It’s about sustained growth through all channels possible.
Many businesses reach a point where growth becomes more difficult instead of easier. What are the most common leadership challenges you see when organizations begin to scale?
Finding the right people to scale with and the right opportunities to support growth would be the two most common challenges businesses face. Trusting a business that you have built, and into which you have put your money, energy, and effort, only to hire the wrong people—or, even worse, toxic people—can easily destroy any business. Likewise, spending time and energy pursuing the wrong opportunity could equally damage a business.
This is where business experts help drive and guide businesses through these and many more challenges. With so many resources easily accessible these days, it’s also easy to drown in all the noise. A business leader and connector is someone who can guide a business owner through these challenges.
What do you find works best when it comes to building business connections?
Having brought business leaders from small, large, and enterprise-level businesses together, I find that, to stand out, you need to provide not only value-add but also a wow factor.
Boss Connect, along with the events and expos I run, focuses on these two core principles. Whether it’s providing business leaders with tours of the new Western Sydney International Airport, the Amazon Factory, or the new Sydney Fish Market, the aim is to create experiences that people can connect over and enjoy—moments they wouldn’t normally have.
We don’t have membership fees, the event tickets are extremely affordable, you aren’t locked into attending events that you won’t get value from, and curating a list of incredible people to ensure everyone gets the most value out of networking is how you stand out.
What is the long-term vision for Boss Connect? What kind of impact do you hope these platforms will have on Australia’s business ecosystem?
The long-term vision is to continue bringing connection to the business leaders we engage with. To continue striving to provide value and, where we may not have the skills needed, find quality partners to introduce clients to.
It’s about building connection, and that’s what Boss Connect’s focus is and will continue to be. Being a point of difference will help drive growth and build recognition amongst business leaders, which, in turn, will help generate quality opportunities for everyone involved.
If you could sit across the table from every founder who feels stuck today and leave them with just one piece of advice, what would it be?
Business needs to be about connection—whether it’s with your staff, customers, partners, family, or suppliers. Boss Connect is exactly about that: providing all the services needed to ensure that a business leader can do just that.
