Los Angeles, CA – Yoga Gives Back Global Ambassadors and supporters from all over the world are gathering their friends, studios, and communities to give back to India, the motherland of yoga this June for YGB’s biggest campaign of the year “Global Gathering for India.”  According to the Gender Gap Report in 2023, India ranks 127th out of 146 countries regarding gender parity.

Since 2010, Yoga Gives Back has focused on empowering underserved girls who fall into this vast gender gap with economic and educational opportunities in marginalized communities throughout Karnataka and West Bengal. This campaign is a critical part of this movement.  YGB currently empowers 3,000 women and children in India with a minimum five-year commitment to each person. YGB’s goal is to reach #OneMillionYogis around the world who join forces to empower individuals to create transformative and lasting changes in their own lives.

Everyone, and especially yoga teachers, are invited to host any type of event that brings folks together in gratitude. This year, YGB’s goal is to have 200 events hosted globally throughout the duration of the Global Gathering campaign, and to expand their beneficiary community to 3,500 women and children. Yoga Gives Back sends a call out to the worldwide yoga community to bring “all hands on deck” in hosting events for Global Gathering for India.

Some of the featured events are local Gala events held by YGB’s Ambassadors in Los Angeles, Kansas City, Key west, London and New York. Additionally, master teachers are joining forces for online panel sessions such as “Authenticity in Yoga” with David Swenson, Lisa Walford, Mary Taylor, Richard Freeman, Seane Corn and moderated by Vikram Jeet Singh. Japanese Ambassadors are hosting “108 Sun Salutations” online event with 108 teachers joining from all over Japan and the world. The quality and variety of events offered during this June campaign are epic.

Here’s How to Join Global Gathering for India

Whether you are a yoga student, teacher, studio-owner, or a supporter, this is an opportunity to take action and be part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Take these steps to participate:

  1. Register your event (any date of your choice) – it could be a yoga class, party, workshop, or anything else that would bring your community together. Once you’ve registered you’ll receive resources and Yoga Gives Back will promote your event.
  2. Attend one-of-a kind special events in-person or ZOOM by the world’s top teachers.
  1. “Gratitude Sponsor”: Become a leader in this campaign with a donation of $1,008 that ensures 4 young girls to continue their higher education and avoid forced marriage, or provide micro-loans for 40 mothers for a year.

Over the last 17 years, YGB’s global community has grown to empower nearly 3000 women and children in India:

  • 550 impoverished mothers resumed micro-loan income-earning work after a three-year pandemic interruption
  • 600 rural young girls continue their primary education avoiding child labor or child marriage
  • 35 abandoned children live in loving home with high-quality education
  • 440 disadvantaged youths receive a five-year Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)
  • 200 youths graduated with Bachelor’s degree or advanced Master’s degree, helping their families and becoming role models in their communities
  • 800 rural poor children received special education assistance who fell behind due to 18 months of school closure due to Covid
  • 50 teachers at government schools in remote rural areas supported with additional resources
  • 600 rural girls gain access to computers with Internet and training
  • 20 women trained to produce, use and sell sanitary napkins.

More about Yoga Gives Back

While 300 million people practice yoga globally and there are numerous yoga nonprofit organizations worldwide, only one, Yoga Gives Back, engages global practitioners to give back to India. In 2007, Kayoko Mitsumatsu began to practice yoga. She experienced such tremendous mental and physical benefits that she felt a strong calling to use her full capacity to give back to India. While working as a documentary filmmaker, Kayoko learned about microfinancing, specifically for underserved women in developing countries to start their own income-earning work and the remarkable impact for the recipients and their families to end the vicious cycle of generations of poverty. Seventeen years ago, when she shared this story with those in her yoga class in Los Angeles, they all supported her vision. Thus, Kayoko created Yoga Gives Back to give back to India by providing microloans and education scholarships to underserved women and children with its mantra, “For the cost of one yoga class, you can change a life.” This is so accurate when you realize that in the past 17 years, Yoga Gives Back has provided more than 3,000 underserved mothers and children with microloans and education funds in Karnataka and West Bengal, been supported by over 150 Ambassadors—leading yoga and mindfulness teachers—worldwide, and reached 30 countries globally.
