The Quiet Ones Win Too

Every year around this time, we sit down to plan an edition on women in leadership, and every year the same tension shows up in the room. Do we chase the loudest stories — the record-breaking raises, the boldest pivots, the leaders who make headlines by force of sheer volume? Or do we go looking for something less flashy and, we’d argue, far more honest about how power actually gets built? This year, we chose the second path on purpose. Because somewhere between “aggressive” and “effective,” an entire category of leadership has been getting quietly overlooked, and it deserved a cover.

That’s where this edition of IMPAAKT begins. Not with noise, but with a woman who built a twenty-five-year career on the opposite of it.

Joanna Radke didn’t start her career pitching in boardrooms. She started at a teller window, watching a bank’s technology systems change in real time and watching real customers try to keep up with that change. It’s the kind of starting point most executive biographies skip over — too small, too unglamorous to make the highlight reel. But it’s precisely where Radke learned the lesson that would carry her through five organizations and some of the most complicated deals in financial services: that trust isn’t won by being the most forceful voice in the room. It’s won by being the person who actually understood what the person across the table was going through. Today, as Vice President of Business Development at SRM, she closes multi-million-dollar, multi-product agreements the same way she once helped a confused customer understand a system change — patiently, honestly, and without ever needing to raise her voice to be heard. Her story anchors this issue, and it’s a genuinely different kind of leadership portrait than the one this industry usually rewards with a cover.

Alongside her, this edition carries a set of stories we’re just as proud of — women who’ve stepped into rooms that weren’t built for them, made calls nobody else was willing to make, and, in doing so, quietly rewrote what leadership in their industries is allowed to look like. Read together, they don’t share a formula. They share something better: proof that there isn’t just one way to lead well.

If there’s a single point of view running through this edition, it’s this — the leadership stories worth telling aren’t always the ones that announce themselves the loudest. Some of the most consequential power in business today is being built by people who never needed the room’s attention to get the room’s respect. This edition is for them, and for anyone still figuring out that those are, very often, the same person.
