Strategy Is What You Say No To

A founder once told us that the hardest decision of his career was not the one he made. It was the one he refused to make — a shiny, tempting expansion that every advisor around the table was pushing for. He said no. Two years later, that “no” was the reason his company was still standing while three competitors who said yes were not. We have never forgotten that conversation. It shaped how we think about this entire edition.

Somewhere along the way, the business world fell in love with “more.” More channels, more meetings, more launches, more noise. Somewhere along the way, we stopped asking whether all that more was actually adding up to anything. Strategy, real strategy, has quietly become one of the most misunderstood words in business — mistaken for a plan, a deck, a quarterly OKR sheet. It is none of those things. It is a filter. It is the discipline of knowing exactly what not to chase.

That is the spirit behind Strategy Leader of the Year, 2026. Not a list of people who did the most. A recognition of people who did the right things, on purpose, even when the obvious path pointed elsewhere.

Our cover story brings you Chris Pennisi, Founder of Boss Connect, a man who has spent more than twenty years inside the messy, high-pressure rooms where commercial decisions get made. Chris’s philosophy is refreshingly unfashionable in an industry obsessed with speed — he argues that growth built on the right connections and the right systems will always outlast growth built on urgency. Talking to him, you get the sense of someone who has watched enough businesses chase shortcuts to know exactly where those roads lead. His conviction is simple and a little uncomfortable: most businesses do not have a strategy problem, they have a clarity problem.

That single idea runs through this entire edition like a thread pulled taut.

And Chris is not alone in these pages. Alongside him, you will meet a handful of founders and operators who have built genuinely remarkable stories of their own — quiet disruptors who are reshaping their industries without needing the spotlight to do it.

If you take away one thing from this edition, let it be this — the leaders worth studying are rarely the ones doing the most. They are the ones who have made peace with doing less, better. In an economy addicted to acceleration, that kind of restraint is not caution. It is courage, dressed in a very unglamorous coat.

We built this edition for anyone tired of confusing motion with meaning. We hope it gives you a reason to pause, and perhaps, a reason to say no to something this week.
