While many in the tech world focus solely on bits and bytes, Nesma Bensalem is asking deeper questions. As AI systems begin to mimic human traits like creativity and reasoning, Nesma, through her company WeCare Impact and collaborations with thought leaders, is exploring the very nature of consciousness itself. Her work bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and age-old philosophical inquiries, promising to reshape our understanding of both machines and ourselves.
Her journey into AI began with a simple yet profound question: How can emerging technologies foster empathy and address complex global issues? This curiosity led her to explore Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Blockchain before ultimately focusing on the transformative potential of AI.
Today, as the founder and CEO of WeCare Impact, Nesma is not just developing AI systems; she’s exploring the very essence of what makes us human, and how technology can enhance rather than replace our fundamental qualities.
Inspired by her vision, we got into conversation to learn more about her journey and WeCare Impact. Below are the excerpts from the interview:
Can you share your journey into AI and what led to the creation of WeCare Impact?
My journey into AI started with a profound curiosity and a deep desire to explore the potential of emerging technologies. I was intrigued by how these technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Blockchain, and AI, could be harnessed to foster empathy and address complex global challenges that our world faces. These were new-age innovations that were poised to shape our world, but the question was, how could we influence their development and use?
The future had arrived, and it was up to us to shape it into something that was more inclusive, equitable, and inspiring. Very quickly, I became drawn to the potential of AI. I saw it as a powerful tool that could accelerate our abilities to find innovative solutions to global challenges and augment our capacities to create a sustainable future.
Furthermore, I realized that AI had the potential to personalize and revolutionize our education and healthcare systems, and even boost human creativity. It became clear to me that if we design these technologies with ethical principles and a community-centric approach from the very start, we could significantly reduce harmful effects and maximize societal benefits.
In 2022, I was recruited by Ruben Daniels, the Founder/CEO of MEMRI AI, to assist with their product and community development. Here, I had the unique opportunity to tackle key issues such as data ownership, information systems, and user-centric product development, all from an ethical standpoint.
The rapid progress of AI also piqued my interest in our understanding of consciousness, especially as machines began to display human-like traits such as creativity and reasoning. My understanding deepened through courses like “Minds vs Machine” at MIT. This curiosity led me to recently establish a collaboration with the Chopra Foundation on a column series that explores AI and consciousness. The goal of this series is to foster a dialogue on how technology can benefit humanity and provide deeper insights into our quest to understand ourselves and the world we live in.
As a speaker for Prophets of AI, I discuss the potential of AI to bridge cultural and socioeconomic divides. I envision a world where technology fosters a more connected and empathetic global community. I provide strategies for using AI ethically and enable its potential to enhance human creativity, revolutionize business practices, and improve societal well-being.
Driven by the belief that arts, technology, and community can create a more equitable, inclusive, and inspiring future, I founded WeCare Impact, a purpose-driven creative studio and consulting firm. As a woman in AI, have you faced any specific challenges?
As a woman in AI, I have undoubtedly encountered challenges related to gender biases and underrepresentation. In many tech spaces, women are often underrepresented, and this disparity can sometimes translate into biases that question our expertise and leadership abilities. These challenges, however, have only strengthened my resolve to succeed.
Overcoming these obstacles has involved a combination of resilience, continuous learning, and building a supportive network. I have sought out mentors and allies who believe in me and who have provided guidance and support throughout my journey. Additionally, I have made it a priority to stay informed and up-to-date with the latest developments in AI and technology, ensuring that my skills and knowledge are always at the cutting edge.
Creating an inclusive work culture at WeCare Impact has also been a key focus. By fostering an environment where diverse voices are heard and valued, we are able to harness the full potential of our team and drive innovation. These efforts have not only helped me navigate the challenges but have also contributed to building a more inclusive tech community.
What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned along your career path?
Throughout my career, I have learned many valuable lessons, but the most significant one is the transformative power of empathy. Whether it’s through storytelling, leadership, or designing systems, understanding and valuing diverse perspectives has been crucial. Empathy allows for deeper connections, fosters innovation, and drives meaningful impact. It has taught me that success isn’t just about individual achievements but about creating positive change that resonates with and benefits communities.
Another crucial lesson is the importance of resilience and adaptability. The journey of entrepreneurship is fraught with challenges and setbacks. Being able to adapt, learn from failures, and persist in the face of adversity has been essential in building WeCare Impact. This mindset has allowed us to continuously innovate and evolve, staying true to our mission while navigating the ever-changing landscape of culture, technology, and social impact.
How is “Women in AI” disrupting the narrative of “technology as a men-dominated ecosystem”?
Women in AI” is a powerful movement that is challenging the traditional narrative of technology as a male-dominated field. By showcasing the achievements of women in AI and creating platforms for their voices to be heard, we are not only breaking stereotypes but also inspiring a new generation of female technologists.
This movement fosters a more inclusive dialogue around diversity in technology, highlighting the importance of diverse perspectives in driving innovation. In the leadership boardroom, this translates to more balanced and holistic decision-making processes. Diverse teams are better equipped to understand and address the needs of a broader audience, leading to more impactful and socially responsible solutions.
Historically, women’s contributions to science and innovation have been marginalized and overshadowed. “Women in AI” is an opportunity to do things differently, allowing AI to usher in a new era of inclusive, ethical, and sustainable growth. This will only be achieved if diverse voices contribute to the conversation.
