Who’s building the next newsroom?

Every few years, someone declares media dead. I’ve stopped counting how many times. What’s dying, again and again, is the version of media that depends on someone else’s platform, someone else’s algorithm, someone else’s definition of what a reader deserves to pay for. The people in this edition didn’t wait for that argument to resolve itself. They built anyway, often before anyone agreed with them that it would work.

That’s the thread running through this issue. Not disruption, a word I’ve grown tired of printing. Ownership. Every leader we’re featuring took something — a beat, a channel, a story that wasn’t being told properly — and decided the only way to fix it was to own the whole thing themselves: the risk, the payroll, the years where nobody was sure it would hold together.

I keep coming back to a simple, slightly uncomfortable observation. Most people wait for permission before they build something. A green light from an investor, a nod from an industry that’s already decided what’s viable. The founders in these pages mostly didn’t get that nod. They built the case for their own existence after the fact, using results nobody could argue with once they showed up.

There’s a version of this story that gets told as pure inspiration, and I want to resist that version here. Building a media company from scratch is not a clean arc. It involves years where the math doesn’t work, decisions that look reckless until they don’t, and in at least one case in this edition, sustained pressure from people with real power to shut the whole thing down. We haven’t smoothed any of that out. It felt more honest, and frankly more useful to anyone reading this while building their own thing, to leave the mess visible.

Beyond the leaders we’ve chosen to go deep on, this edition also carries a set of shorter success stories from founders and operators who’ve made their own dent in this industry — different geographies, different formats, same underlying instinct to build rather than wait.

If there’s one thing I’d want a reader to take from this issue, it’s this: the businesses that last in media right now aren’t the loudest ones. They’re the ones that figured out, early and stubbornly, exactly who they existed for — and built everything else around answering to that person, and no one else.
